Norwegian for deaf foreigners
Do you want to learn Norwegian Sign Language and become more confident in reading and writing Norwegian? With us, you will become part of a unique and safe sign language environment where you will learn language, culture and how Norwegian society works.
You will receive instruction in Norwegian Sign Language and learn to read and write Norwegian. In addition, you will gain insight into Norwegian culture, traditions and social life. All instruction is in sign language and is adapted to your level and language background.

Elinor Amalie Rønning
Teacher
Elinor is a pioneer in the field of sign language in Norway. She has done important work related to the development of teaching materials for Norwegian Sign Language. She herself was a student at Ål Folk High School, and has long experience with us. Elinor is a trained sign language teacher and has special expertise in subject didactics related to Norwegian Sign Language, sign language history and deaf culture.
Alexander Kvalheim
Department head at the folk high school
Alexander is from Nordfjord, and has studied for many years in Bergen. He is a lecturer with a master’s degree in Nordic studies, and history as a second subject. He also has a one-year study in sign language and interpreting. In his master’s thesis, he writes about the pedagogical practice surrounding exemption from Nynorsk language teaching for the deaf in schools. He is also involved in organizational work and human rights.

Who is the program suitable for?
The line is suitable for those who are deaf and minority speakers and who want to learn Norwegian sign language and to learn Norwegian reading and writing. It is also suitable for those in the introductory program.
This is what you will learn
You learn to use Norwegian sign language and develop skills in Norwegian reading and writing that are adapted to your level. We work with practical communication, deaf culture and history, and give you knowledge about Norwegian society, rights and the use of the interpreting service.

Price for the school year:
The school year costs NOK 130,000.

Loans and grants:
You can receive up to NOK 151,700 in support from Lånekassen. 40% of the loan will be converted into a grant when you complete the school year.
Ål Folk High School follows Lånekassen’s payment plan.
