Welcome to the Winter 2025 Dr Deaf Workshops!
This year, we offer two parallel events:
- PhD Deaf Workshop
- Deaf Winter Writing Retreat
Note: You must register for and stay with one event.
While the events run separately, there will be shared social time, wellness activities, and joint workshops, including our famous sauna and ice-bathing trip!
PhD Deaf Workshop
Are you currently in the early stages of your PhD career? Are you a Master’s student considering whether a PhD is something you would be interested in? This Dr Deaf PhD Deaf workshop is for you!
This workshop will bring together a cohort of current and prospective deaf PhD students for a week-long immersion in doctoral work in the sciences, social sciences and humanities.
What to Expect:
● The PhD path (STEM and Humanities/Social Sciences)
● Working with supervisors
● Securing and working with good interpreters
● Presentation skills
● Picking and refining a dissertation topic
● And more!
Eligibility:
Deaf individuals considering or currently enrolled in a PhD.
Bachelor’s degree recommended.

Dr Deaf Winter Writing Retreat
Are you a deaf academic working on a writing project like a PhD dissertation, article, or book? Join our deaf-centered retreat to write alongside other deaf scholars, share feedback, and exchange writing tips.
- Daily optional workshops or lectures
- Peer support, wellness activities, and social time
- Peaceful snowy mountain setting
Open to deaf PhD students, working academics, and independent scholars. Master’s students may be accepted if space allows.
Note: This retreat is not suitable for Bachelor’s students or those needing 1:1 writing support.
Bonus: Quiet, focused writing time with a community that understands you.

Departure: Friday, 12 Dec
Free bus to Ål station (for 11:30 train to Oslo)

Transport
Take the train from Oslo S to Ål. A free bus meets the 19:30 train on 7 December and returns for the 11:30 train on 12 December.
For all other times, you must arrange your own transport.

DeafBlind participants
We welcome DeafBlind participants and other participants who require personal interpreters.
Important Notes:
- Participants are responsible for bringing their own interpreters.
- Interpreters who stay on-site and eat meals at the workshop center will be charged a room and board fee.
- This fee will be invoiced and can typically be submitted for reimbursement from your national interpreting agency.
- Interpreter accommodation is not guaranteed unless:
- The interpreter is registered at the same time as the participant.
- The need for accommodation and meals is clearly indicated during registration.
We strongly recommend that DeafBlind and other participants requiring interpreters complete both their own and their interpreter’s registration as early as possible to secure space.

Accommodation Details
Participants stay in shared apartments or cabins on campus. Each guest receives bed linens and a towel. Shared kitchens and bathrooms are available.
Before departure, please:
- Wash and dry all dishes
- Remove bed linens and towel
- Take out your trash
A washing machine is available in House 42 (C-building).
Indoor shoes are required inside the main building—please bring slippers or indoor footwear.
We do our best to place you with preferred roommates if requested during registration.
